Inlays & Onlays: Partial Crowns for Lasting Strength

A conservative solution when a filling isn’t enough, but a full crown isn’t necessary

Inlays and onlays are typically made from porcelain or gold, though composite materials may also be used. Our team will carefully guide you in selecting the best material for your specific needs, ensuring both durability and a natural appearance.

In some cases, a simple filling won’t provide enough support, but a full crown may not be required. That’s when inlays and onlays, often called partial crowns, are the ideal solution. These restorations are designed like custom puzzle pieces, fitting perfectly into your tooth to restore its shape, function, and strength.

The Difference Between Inlays and Onlays

Inlay

An inlay and an onlay are both types of indirect dental restorations, but they differ in how much of the tooth they cover. An inlay is designed to fit within the chewing surface of the tooth, specifically between the cusps, which are the raised points on the tooth. It functions much like a filling but is custom-made in a dental lab and then cemented into place, making it more durable and precise.

Onlay

An onlay is used when the damage to the tooth is more extensive and involves not just the grooves between the cusps but also one or more cusps themselves. Because it extends over the cusps, an onlay offers more coverage and protection, and it is often referred to as a “partial crown.”
